Rockwall Fence Permits
In Rockwall, you must obtain a permit ($35) to build a fence at your residence.
You must have city permission to build a fence in the front yard up to 4 feet tall. It must be 50% transparent, using wood, iron or metal.
Elsewhere on your property, the limit is 6 feet to 8 feet for a wood fence and 4 feet to 8 feet for a transparent fence.
The city allows wood pickets, vinyl coated chain link, wrought iron, decorative metal, brick, stone, split-face CMU or burnished block, vinyl, fiberglass composite and concrete. You can’t use barbed wire, electric or corrugated steel.
Wood fences must be cedar. No spruce allowed.
Restrictions abound on plank thickness, post guidelines, and the prohibition of chain-link fencing (though it can be used to replace an existing fence, with very strict guidelines).
